AI is a balance

My post about my browser change from Firefox to Vivaldi made some people comment on the way I talked about AI.

Let me start by saying: I am not against AI. I used to be very skeptical, but like with everything else, I am open-minded, and my views will 100% change over time. AI is moving so quickly at this point, and the world is trying to hold on for dear life because it’s going so fast. Maybe too fast.

Apparently, I was wrong about the water usage. I saw a study and a video explaining it further, and the idea of enormous water usage was basically a TikTok trend that went wild and became accepted as truth.

AI coding wasn't alwasy great.. I've been playing around with it, both in the chat and lately with agentic coding. The latter has definitely improved with newer models like Claude Opus 4.5 and OpenAI GPT-5.2-Codex. I’ve been experimenting with those and OpenCode for the past few weeks, and the combination is definitely powerful.

There have also been the doomsday predictions (especially on LinkedIn), which have made me distance myself further. I generally find those annoying, as I don’t believe software engineers can be fully replaced. According to them, I should already be looking for a new career. And let me not even mention the opportunists who claim they build and sell three SaaS businesses a month. Christ…

Another thing is AI "art". I still find that extremely problematic, how it uses artists’ work and reproduces it as its own, without supporting or crediting the original creators. Sure, the quality is not there yet, but it’s improving at a pace that makes the ethical questions harder to ignore, not easier.

But I can’t deny how useful AI has become in my own workflow. It helps me try out ideas fast and prototype things I otherwise wouldn’t have had time for. It doesn’t replace understanding, but it accelerates experimentation, and that can be pretty valuable.

I think my skepticism doesn’t come from rejecting the technology. I think its the culture around it. The hype and the certainty with which people claim to know exactly how everything will unfold. Nobody really knows yet.

So I’m not against AI. I’m watching, learning and questioning it like everyone else, trying to figure out what it actually means once the noise settles. It's a balance.
